What struck me was the sheer number of theft stories, yet none of them had the same method of stealing. So, I decided to create a set of rules to help minimize the risk of losing money from my wallet. Here’s what I came up with:
- Never Store Your Seed Phrase Online: This includes Telegram, iCloud, VK, or even screenshots in your gallery. - Don’t Let Anyone Borrow Your Phone: There have been numerous cases where people had their phones stolen after lending them out for charging or connecting a USB drive to their laptop. Keep your phone close!
- Keep Your Crypto Amounts Private: Don’t share how much crypto you have, and consider disguising your wallet app on your phone as something else (you can Google how to do this). I remember a story about a guy in Bali who bragged about his crypto holdings and ended up getting kidnapped for $300k.
- Don’t Put All Your Eggs in One Basket: Spread your crypto across 2–4 wallets or more, and only use trusted ones. Remember the Atomic Wallet hack? Hackers exploited a vulnerability and stole over $100 million from users.
- Be Cautious When Crossing Borders: In rare cases, customs officials may insist on checking your phone and discovering your crypto wallet.
- Don’t Open Suspicious PDF Files: Unknown PDFs can often hide malware. Stay safe!
To sum it up: there’s no 100% guarantee against theft. Even buying a Ledger can have vulnerabilities, as bad actors might find ways to discover your seed phrase if they see you with one.
